Chemical Peels

Chemical peels have been used for the than 100 years to provide a controlled shedding of dead skin cells. In the US , thousands of chemical peels are performed each year to repair damaged skin and stimulate the production of healthy new cells.

Chemical Peels – Manhattan Office

In our Manhattan office, we use three types of chemical peels to rejuvenate your skin and bring back a youthful glow. During a consultation, Dr. O’Shaughnessy will discuss your expectations and review your medical history to determine whether you are a good candidate for a chemical peel.

Currently we offer alphahydroxy acids, Beta lift peels, and Obagi Blue peels (TCA). All of our formulas are customized for your skin type to ensure that you achieve the finest cosmetic results. (Chemical peels may be covered by insurance if it is a dministered for a medical reason.) Again, best results are seen in a series of peels, usually 4-6 peels in conjunction with other anti-aging treatments, including medical grade skin cosmetceuticals and nutriceuticals.

What Happens During a Chemical Peel?

Reactions to chemical peels are similar to sunburn but can vary from one individual to another. Light peels produce redness and scaling for a few days whereas deeper peels may require a longer recovery time. After a medium to deep chemical peel, ointments and dressings may be necessary to protect your skin while healing. In general, we only perform superficial to medium depth peels in our office so our patients have virtually no “down time” and can resume their normal activity as soon as 24 hours post procedure.

Following your chemical peel, your skin will be smooth and tight. You’ll notice an overall improvement in the color, tone and texture of your skin. You will need to follow a prescribed home care regiment and avoid the sun.

Benefits of Chemical Peels

Chemical peels are beneficial if you have any of the following skin conditions:

  • Fine line and wrinkles
  • Sun damaged skin
  • Age spots
  • Freckles
  • Superficial acne scars

Chemical facial peels are not a substitute for a face lift and will not eliminate flaccid skin.
